Suet

Halal status: Source dependent

Source dependent. Suet is the raw hard fat found around the kidneys of cattle or sheep. It is Halal only if derived from animals slaughtered according to Islamic dietary law (Zabihah). Vegetable suet made entirely from plant fats is Halal. Toronto Public Health lists animal shortening and lard as Haram; the same principle applies to non-Zabihah suet.
