Halal status: Source dependent

Carbon black, also called vegetable carbon, listed as E153, a black food colouring. MUIS marks it doubtful and says it may be made from animal charcoal or vegetable sources. SANHA marks it doubtful and gives its source as animal or vegetable charred material. A vegan claim or a halal mark on the pack settles it.
