Halal status: Source dependent

Stearyl tartrate, listed as E483, an emulsifier made from stearic and tartaric acids. MUIS and IFANCA mark it doubtful. SANHA marks it doubtful, says to check the source of both acids, and lists tartaric acid as a by-product of the wine industry or synthetic. A halal mark on the pack settles it.
