Whey

Halal status: Source dependent

The liquid left after making cheese. Whether it is halal depends on the enzyme used to make the cheese. SANHA says whey is halal when the rennet is microbial, from plants, or from a halal-slaughtered animal. IFANCA says to investigate it, because the cheese may be made with enzymes from pork, calf, goat or microorganisms. A halal mark on the pack settles it.
