Halal status: Source dependent

Protein taken from whey, the liquid left after making cheese. Whether it is halal depends on the enzyme used to make the cheese. SANHA says whey and whey protein are halal when the rennet is microbial, from plants, or from a halal-slaughtered animal. IFANCA says to investigate whey, because the cheese may be made with enzymes from pork, calf, goat or microorganisms. A halal mark on the pack settles it.
