Shallot, a bulb vegetable of the onion genus; Codex classifies shallots among the bulb vegetables. IslamQA rules that everything that grows from the earth is permissible in principle, citing the Qur'an: “He it is Who created for you all that is on earth” (al-Baqarah 2:29).
